How to read your oil tank gauge

The standard residential setup is a float gauge: a clear plastic cylinder on top of the tank with a red disc or rod inside, marked F, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, and E from top to bottom. A float rides on the oil surface inside the tank, connected by a hinged arm, and the disc shows the float's height. Read it straight on at eye level; a disc sitting between marks reads as the lower mark for ordering purposes. If tapping the gauge top makes the disc move, it was stuck, which these gauges do with age. A gauge pinned at F for weeks after heavy burner run time is stuck too.

The important subtlety is that the gauge reads oil height, not volume. On the oval tanks used for heating oil, equal steps of height do not hold equal gallons: the shell narrows toward the bottom, so the last quarter of the gauge holds noticeably less than a quarter of the oil. That is why the tables below run lower at 1/4 than a simple capacity-divided-by-four chart.

Tanks without a working gauge can be stick-read: remove the fill cap, lower a clean dry rod to the tank bottom, and measure the wet line in inches. Ran out of heating oil? What to do

Yes, you can use diesel in an oil furnace short-term.#2 diesel from any gas station is essentially the same fuel as heating oil #2. Take one or two clean 5 gallon cans to the station, pour the diesel into your tank's outside fill pipe, and 5 to 10 gallons will run a typical furnace for one to several days until a delivery arrives. Kerosene also works and is the better choice if the outdoor fill and lines are already very cold, since it will not wax up. Regular gasoline is never acceptable in an oil burner.

After adding fuel, the burner usually needs to be primed. Running dry pulls air into the fuel line, and the burner will lock out rather than fire on air. Wait ten minutes or so after adding fuel to let sediment settle, then press the red reset button on the burner once (once only; repeated resets flood the chamber). If it still will not fire, the line needs bleeding: a small hex bleeder fitting on the fuel pump is opened while the burner runs until oil flows clear. That is a two-minute job for a technician and a doable one for a comfortable DIYer with a cup and a 3/8 wrench.

Then deal with why it happened. Call your dealer for an emergency delivery; most prioritize genuine run-outs, and some charge a fee for same-day service. A run-out also stirs tank-bottom sediment into the fuel line, so if the burner runs rough afterward, the filter cartridge and nozzle are the usual suspects. If the run-out happened because the gauge is unreliable or the tank is aging, that is the moment to have the tank looked at rather than after a February failure.

Dealer-site widgets that multiply nominal capacity by the gauge fraction overstate remaining oil by 20 percent or more exactly when the tank is nearly empty, which is the worst possible place for the error.
