Every stored fuel is dying from the day it leaves the terminal. The only questions are how fast, and whether the storage helps or hurts. Treat these as midpoints, not guarantees. A batch with more cracked components ages faster. Winter-blend gasoline loses volatility sooner than summer blend. And any water in the container rewrites the schedule for the worse.

How to tell if diesel is bad without a lab

The jar test settles most arguments. Draw a sample from the bottom of the tank (not the top, the bottom is where the evidence lives), let it sit an hour in a clear glass jar, and look. Good diesel is clear amber with nothing settled out. Trouble reads three ways. Color gone dark toward cola. A sour or rotten smell replacing the oily one. Or a separate layer at the bottom, whether water, black slime, or gritty sediment.

Dark fuel is not automatically dead fuel.

Color alone means oxidation has started, and oxidized diesel still burns, just with more filter changes. Slime is different. Black or brown slime is microbial growth, and by the time you can see it in a jar, the colony is established on the tank walls too. Killing it takes a biocide; removing what it leaves behind takes physically cleaning the tank, which is where a tank cleaning contractor and fuel polishing come in. One exception worth knowing. Fuel that fails only on smell but passes on color and clarity is often fine for farm equipment. Paying disposal fees on it is money wasted.

Why ethanol gas dies fastest

E10 has a chemistry problem the other fuels do not: its ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water vapor straight out of the air. A vented tank or a can that gets opened weekly feeds it a steady water supply. The ethanol holds that water in suspension until it cannot, then the whole water-alcohol fraction drops out as a separate corrosive layer on the bottom. That is phase separation, and it is a one-way door. No additive rejoins separated gas, and the layer sits exactly where fuel pickups drink.

The fuel above the layer is damaged too, since it lost its octane-carrying ethanol. Boats, snowblowers, and anything else that sits for months are the reason ethanol-free gas commands a premium at marinas. If E10 is what you have, the counter is simple. Store it full and sealed, treat it fresh, and use it within a season. Daily drivers never see the problem because the fuel never sits long enough.

How to store gasoline safely (and make it last)

Storage life and storage safety come from the same habits. Use containers actually rated for fuel. Fill them to about 95 percent, enough to squeeze out air while leaving room for expansion. Keep them out of living spaces, off direct sun, and away from anything with a pilot light. Most fire codes cap garage gasoline storage around 25 gallons in approved containers. Check your local rules before stacking cans, because insurance adjusters certainly will after a fire.

Full and sealed beats half-empty and vented, every time.

The air space above the fuel is where the lightest compounds evaporate and where moist air condenses each cool night, so shrinking that space slows both failure modes at once. Rotation beats preservation for small quantities. Run the oldest can through the mower or the truck each month, refill it, and shelf life stops mattering. Bulk tanks cannot rotate that way. For them, the stabilizer math and an annual bottom sample carry the load.

What fuel stabilizers actually do

Stabilizers are antioxidants with a supporting cast. The core chemistry interrupts the oxidation chain reactions that turn fuel into gum and varnish. Marine formulas add corrosion inhibitors and demulsifiers for the water problem. On fresh gasoline or diesel, a stabilizer roughly doubles useful storage life for a few cents per gallon. Treating any fuel you plan to keep past a season is the cheapest insurance in this business.

Two limits keep them honest. Stabilizer added to old fuel accomplishes nothing, because the oxidation it prevents has already happened; and no bottle reverses phase separation or kills an established microbial colony (that job needs a biocide plus cleaning). Three to four months for standard E10 pump gas in a portable can, six to eight for ethanol-free, and roughly double those figures in a sealed tank with stabilizer added at fill-up. Gasoline loses its lightest compounds first, which is why old gas starts engines poorly long before it looks any different. A boat tank that sat all winter with untreated E10 is the classic failure case: the ethanol pulls in moisture all season, then the first warm weekend stirs the separated layer into the fuel pickup.

Can you use 2 year old diesel?

Sometimes, and the tank bottom decides it. Diesel stored sealed, cool, dry, and treated can still burn fine at two years. The same fuel in a vented farm tank with a little water in the bottom is usually a microbial colony by then. Pull a sample from the lowest point into a clear jar: bright and clear with no settled layer means run it in something forgiving first; dark, sour, or slimy means dispose of it. Old diesel that passes the jar test still deserves a fresh fuel filter on whatever burns it.

Does diesel go bad in cold weather?

Cold is the best thing that can happen to stored diesel. Oxidation and microbial growth both slow dramatically below 60 F, which is why the same fuel lasts noticeably longer in a Minnesota shed than a Georgia one. The catch is that cold introduces its own failure mode: untreated #2 clouds and plugs filters in the teens. What happens if you burn old fuel?

Small engines usually tell you immediately: hard starts, surging, and a varnished carburetor that needs cleaning. Diesel equipment fails more expensively, with clogged filters, injector deposits, and in bad cases a sludge slug that shuts a generator down mid-run. The machine that matters most is the one that only runs in emergencies. A standby generator that sat on stale fuel discovers the problem during the outage, which is the one moment you cannot swap filters and wait. Marginal fuel belongs in a tractor or a truck you can pull over, never in the backup power.

Shelf life figures are planning estimates built from industry rules of thumb, not measurements of your fuel. Actual condition depends on the batch, water exposure, and temperature history the calculator cannot see. For fuel feeding critical equipment, a laboratory fuel analysis (ASTM D975 for diesel) is the real answer, and it costs less than one ruined injector.
